Dear Parent, (s) Greetings! Let's glance through the months of ‘Dazzling’ December. Theme- Dinosaurs and Christmas ‘Dinosaurs may be extinct from the face of the planet, but they are alive and well in our imagination’. - Steve Miller Learning about dinosaurs can stimulate kids’ imagination and cognitive skills. Studying the different types of dinosaurs can help kids learn to make inferences about what life was like for dinosaurs, as well as hone other critical thinking and problem-solving skills. • Our monthly theme was Dinosaurs, as they are one of the best ways for kids to learn about the evolutionary history of our planet. These incredible and fascinating creatures taught children how this unique species survived, adapted, and disappeared. • The children were apprised of different types of dinosaurs and their unique characteristics. They were fascinated to learn about the habitat and eating habits of these giant beasts. • The educator also made children aware of the spirit of the Christmas festival. Children sang Christmas carols along with the teacher. Naturalistic Intelligence ‘Preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known” -Carl Sagan To make our students aware of the significance of saving the environment, they were informed about climate change. This knowledge helped children understand the real causes behind the climate crisis, empowering them to take responsibility for making positive changes. Teaching conservation to the next generation is crucial, as attitudes about the earth’s natural resources begin to develop at a young age. The educator sensitized the children to the benefits of conserving natural resources. The educator also explained the concept of extinct and endangered animals, which helped the children understand sustainability and the threats posed to native animals and their environment. Verbal Linguistic Intelligence –English As children start learning to read, incorporating simple sentences can help develop their reading skills. Students were guided and encouraged to read words with consonant-vowel-consonant patterns, as well as the names of some common fruits. They practiced reading sight words and created a word wall in the classroom for further reading practice. Children were also introduced to reading and writing words with digraphs – ‘ch’, ‘sh’, ‘th’, and ‘oo’ long vowel sound words. The students worked on reading and writing short sentences, focusing on the concepts of ‘This’ and ‘That’. They also learned to recognize and write rhyming words of the “o” family and practiced writing the letters of the alphabet in their notebooks, from 'a' to 'z'. Storytelling Stories bring facts to life and promote brain development and imagination in children. They contribute to language development, emotional understanding, and help strengthen relationships. The week began with an activity based on the previous week's story, "The Mixed-Up Chameleon", during which students created freehand drawings of different animals. In the following week, a new story was introduced, "The Bad-Tempered Ladybug", which explores different types of 'Harmful' and 'Useful' insects. The story 'Dream Snow' was chosen for the Christmas-themed week. Moving on to the last week of the month, the educator continued with 'The Bad-Tempered Ladybug - Part 2’. Drama Dramatic play is a form of play where children take on different roles and act them out. During this activity, they go beyond their normal selves and pretend to be someone or something else, dramatizing situations and emotions for the characters they have chosen. To cultivate these skills, they learned the basic technique of delivering dialogues along with the necessary expressions. They were also taught the appropriate way to enter and exit the stage while performing. Logical Mathematical Intelligence Stimulation of logical-mathematical intelligence promotes cognitive development, especially in terms of logical thinking, reasoning, problem-solving, and concentration. The educator introduced the concept of ‘addition’ and its symbol through a story, Gus the Plus, using concrete objects like buttons, blocks, erasers, or pencils. During the second half of the month, alternate phrases for ‘addition,’ such as ‘sum up,’ ‘more than,’ ‘together,’ ‘all of them,’ ‘one more,’ and ‘total,’ were also discussed. Children were also introduced to the concept of line addition through workbook pages, followed by the reiteration of addition in a fun way using the connector block activity. They revisited the concepts of ‘What Comes After/Before’ and ‘In Between’ through fun worksheets in the workbook. The concept of ‘Odd One Out’ was introduced using various household objects like spoons/forks, pens/pencils, crayons/sketch pens, bowls/mugs, etc. The concept was further reinforced with the help of a video demonstration. Later, children completed practice questions in their workbooks. The concept of time was introduced through a brainstorming session with our little mathematicians, where children were asked questions like ‘When do you get up? When do you go to bed? When do we start our first class in the morning?’ This was followed by a ‘Time reading’ activity, which involved a hands- on task of making dummy clocks and wristwatches in their notebooks. They were also introduced to the concept of time-‘half-past’ on the clock cut-out by positioning the clock hands. Children also practiced logical calculations and L-shape puzzles in their SEP Edu sessions. Visual-Spatial Intelligence Visual Art Visual arts not only help children represent their thoughts and skills but also help them explore their innate creative and artistic skills. In the first week, the educator discussed about the ‘Wildlife Conservation Day’ as it falls on Dec 4th every year. Later, the children made a free-hand drawing of reptiles and amphibians. In the second week, the children danced to the song ‘Dinosaurs have great big teeth’. Later they made a free hand drawing of Dinosaur along with the educator. In the third week, the children made the reindeer headband craft on the occasion of Christmas as they sang the famous carol ‘Rudolph the red-nosed Reindeer’. In the fourth week, children were apprised of the adverse effects of climate change and later they made drawings to showcase the ways in which they could make the ‘Mother Earth’ happy. Pottery “Potter is a practical and lasting form of art. Not everyone can afford an original painting, but most people can afford pottery” - Susie Cooper Keeping in mind individual differences, here at Suncity School, we advocate pottery sessions for our young hands. Every child shapes their version of a sculpture. To integrate clay modeling with the monthly theme, children made a dinosaur and colored it. To reiterate the vyanjan ‘च,’ our young artists sculpted a ‘चमच’. To recapitulate the vocabulary words with vyanjan ‘ल,’ they made ‘लट्टू’. Montessori “We must accept adaptation as the basis upon which we can build a concept of education.” - Dr. Maria Montessori In the month of December, children practiced the following activities: • Zipper frame (Practical life skills): Children practiced zipping and unzipping using a dressing frame. They also applied the same skill to their school jackets, acquiring coordination of movements. • Colour tablet box 3 – (Sensorial Activity): This activity provided the child with a key to orient themselves in the world of color. • Addition stripes (Numeracy Activity): This activity aimed to guide the child through all possible combinations in addition. • Large moveable alphabet (Verbal Linguistic Activity): This activity assisted the child in analyzing and exploring the language they are familiar with, enabling them to reproduce words with graphic symbols. Imaginarium Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere. -Albert Einstein Children enjoyed exploring different stations and creating memories with friends at the Imaginarium. Musical Intelligence Music is the art form that combines rhythm and sound to form a functional melodic line. The music itself transcends time, space, and culture. Indian Music Indian music often depends upon melodic movement, i.e., the occurrence of tones or musical notes to create a single line of tune. During the month, children practiced singing the welcome song ‘आओ आओ संगीत बनाओ,’ vocal warm-ups, rhythm clapping, the ‘Sa Re Ga Ma’ Body game, and the ‘Shake-the Shaker’ song along with the educator. Western Music Rhythms and melodies help kids memorize phrases, understand rhyming patterns, and grasp context. During the month, children practiced singing the most popular and much-loved carol, ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,’ along with the educator. Dance “Dancing is the joy of movement and the heart of life” To celebrate special moments and festivals, dance has been an integral part. Dancing at Christmas and singing carols are rooted in ancient history and originally went hand in hand. To keep up this spirit of celebration this month, our young artists matched their steps with the carol ‘Feliz Navidad.’ Feliz Navidad is a phrase meaning 'Happy Christmas' or 'Merry Christmas' in Spanish. The Christmas dance performance is a way for children to enjoy creating and performing a summary of what has happened throughout the year. This dance is based on the themes of Gratitude and Friendship. Bodily Kinesthetic Intelligence Bodily-Kinesthetic is a learning style often referred to as ‘learning with the hands’ or physical learning. People with Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence can learn more easily by doing, exploring, and discovering. The month was full of exercises to boost students’ stamina and gross motor skills. In the first week, children enjoyed jumping over hurdles and walked in a zigzag pattern around agility sticks to reach the finishing point. In the second week, children attempted an array of skills such as jumping, hopping, and lifting while handling the given props. During the third week, children enjoyed a few gymnastic drills. In the fourth week, children were introduced to basic ‘Cricket Skills‘ and exercises. They were apprised of the rules of batting and bowling, practicing eye-hand coordination while hitting a ball using a bat. Skating Skating is a great activity for kids, offering a wide range of benefits for their physical, mental, and social development. It combines fun, fitness, and skill- building in a way that keeps children active. During the month, children practiced the following skills while skating: • Speed Skating Trials • Zig Zag Walking • The Color Game Zig-zag skating is a type of agility drill that challenges the cardiovascular system while training the leg muscles, improving speed in skating. The defining feature of zig-zag is that children need to move in a diagonal path quickly. Using a colored theme, children were asked to skate and stop at a particular color. This skill motivates them to move, reinforces their heel brake stop, and enhances their color recognition. Interpersonal Intelligence Birthday celebration- Show & Tell Our little ones find great joy in birthday celebrations. So, on Friday, December 29th, 2023, we celebrated the birthdays of all KG children born in December. The theme of the celebration was 'Dinosaurs', and the children showcased their speaking skills through a 'Show & Tell' activity. They enthusiastically shared their thoughts with props and learned about party etiquette. Suncitizens believe in learning by doing, and through these little initiatives, we learned the universal values of kindness and compassion, striving to make the world a better place. PUPPET SHOW A captivating puppet show was organized by our school on 15th December 2023 for students of Grades Pre-nursery to II, presented by Ms. Shreedevi Sunil from Talking Turtles Storytellers, supported by Prabha Khaitan Foundation and Muskaan – Steps to Culture. The show aimed to spark imagination and create lasting memories for our young learners through an enchanting storyline, colourful characters, and interactive elements. The hall was filled with laughter, applause, and magical visions when our esteemed storyteller narrated three different stories: ‘The Three Little Pigs,’ ‘The Gingerbread Man,’ and the story of the ‘Christmas Tree’. This was done through hand gestures, voice modulation, and professionally crafted puppets. In conclusion, a puppet show in school is not just a performance; it’s a holistic learning experience that nurtures creativity, imagination, and concentration skills. It creates lasting memories for both the audience, fostering a positive and dynamic educational environment. LEAP Learn> Engage >Acquire >Perform "Creativity is intelligence having fun" -Albert Einstein To unleash the creativity of our children, we conduct LEAP activities each month wherein children perform various brainstorming tasks to enhance their higher-order thinking skills and ingenuity to be future-ready. Remember which one I caught? Children were given materials like wood, iron nails, a ruler, paper, coins, etc., along with a magnet. They used their predicting and experimenting skills to determine whether the given material was magnetic or non-magnetic. This activity also enhanced their reasoning and comparing skills.
